In 2019, my colleague Lauren Bavis and I went through PRX’s Project Catapult incubator program, working within our public radio station to develop its first podcast using “design thinking” to tailor it to our ideal listener. We came up with Sick, a serial narrative show about what goes wrong in places that keep us healthy, and we worked on everything from reporting and sound design to marketing and ad sales.

Season One focused on the fertility industry and an Indianapolis doctor who betrayed his patients’ trust by using his own sperm to impregnate them. After the pandemic put the show on hiatus, we came back in late 2021 for a second season that focused on how prisons fail to keep people healthy — even though prisoners are the only people in America entitled to health care.

Since leaving WFYI, I’ve written, produced and edited some other podcasts, including the Financial Times and Pushkin show Unhedged, which comes out twice a week, and WIRED Politics Lab.
